José de San Martín (1778–1850) was one of the fathers of South American independence and sought the creation of an alliance of nations in South America. Argentinean citizens gave this equestrian monument to the United States in 1925, and the bronze plaque on the back of the sculpture likens San Martín to George Washington because they shared desires for democracy, justice, and liberty.

During his lifetime, John Ericsson revolutionized several facets of technology. The 
Swedish-born engineer-inventor is best known for his work during the Civil War when he transformed naval warfare through his design of the iron-plated USS Monitor. The movements of Ericsson’s pencil across his drafting board were as crucial to victory as the movements of Lincoln’s armies across battlefields.

Throughout our nation’s history, service men and women have gone bravely into battle, risking their lives and livelihoods, sacrificing their safety to defend America. When their duty is done, many return home to life as it was. Sadly, for over 4 million veterans seriously injured in the line of duty, leaving the battlefield does not mark the end of conflict. These permanently disabled heroes often carry home life-altering disabilities – stern reminders of the price of freedom.

The sculptural monument to President James A. Garfield by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910), cast by The Henry-Bonnard Co. of New York, with a pedestal designed by Richard Morris Hunt, is an outstanding example of American sculpture.

Located in downtown Washington, DC, the memorial honors Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice. 
The memorial is located at the intersection of Independence Avenue and West Basin Drive SW in Washington, DC, near the Tidal Basin and other iconic memorials along the National Mall.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, the central library of the DC Public Library, opened on August 21, 1972. An extensive study by the firm of Booz, Allen and Hamilton had established the need for a new central library in the downtown business district.  The world-famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was commissioned to design the structure, and ground was broken at 9th and G streets in July 1968. By action of the Board of Library Trustees in 1971, the new building was named in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Robert A. Taft Memorial and Carillon honors Senator Taft from Ohio, who served in the Senate from 1938-1953.

Located north of the United States Capitol, on Constitution Avenue between New Jersey Avenue and First Street, N.W.
Designed by architect Douglas W. Orr, the memorial consists of a Tennessee marble tower and a 10-foot bronze statue of Senator Taft sculpted by Wheeler Williams.

The neoclassical, white marble sarcophagus stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. Since 1921, it has provided a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified World War I service members, and Unknowns from later wars were added in 1958 and 1984. The Tomb has also served as a place of mourning and a site for reflection on military service.

The cemetery is also a stop on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metrorail system. Arlington Cemetery station, on Metro's Blue line, is a short walk from the Welcome Center.

There are no fees to enter National Mall and Memorial Parks and most of its hundreds of sites. 

The sinking of the RMS Titanic, on the night of April 15, 1912, was one of history's greatest maritime disasters. After hitting an iceberg, the ship sank in 2 hours and 40 minutes. There were not enough lifeboats, and during the evacuation, many were not filled to capacity. Of the 2,223 on board, only 706 were saved.

A popular tourist destination, the National Mall is home to several notable monuments and memorials, including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington 

Monument, World War II Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Equally important on this symbolic landscape is the Vietnam Women’s Memorial located just north of the Reflecting Pool.

The Washington Monument Lodge, located along 15th Street between Madison and Jefferson drives, opens at 8:45 a.m. for distribution of free, same day, timed tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. One person (16+ years old) may obtain up to six tickets for an available ticket time.

The Washington Monument is closed one day during the first week of every month for routine maintenance. In 2024, the closure dates are: January 3, February 1, March 4, April 1, May 1, June 4, July 9, August 1, September 4, October 1, November 6, December 5. The monument is also closed on July 4 and Dec. 25.

The memorial grounds are open year-round from 6 am until midnight.

Based on an iconic image of the second flag-raising on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II, the US Marine Corps War Memorial is dedicated to "the Marine dead of all wars and their comrades of other services who fell fighting beside them."
During the summer, the US Marine Corps holds Sunset Parades at the Memorial every Tuesday evening in 2023 from June 6 to August 1 (except for July 4) at 7 p.m.

The Sunset Parades are a one hour performance, featuring the music of "The Commandant's Own", The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and precision drill by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.

The Air Force Memorial is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas Day.
Parking is free at the Air Force Memorial, though limited. There are 28 parking spaces along the entry road are open to visitors and ceremony guests on a first come, first served basis.

The Pentagon Memorial captures that moment in time at 9:37 a.m. when 184 lives became intertwined for eternity.  Each victim’s age and location at the time of the attack have been permanently inscribed into the Memorial by the unique placement and direction of each of the 184 Memorial Units.

Arlington House is the nation’s memorial to Robert E. Lee. It honors him for specific reasons, including his role in promoting peace and reunion after the Civil War. In a larger sense it exists as a place of study and contemplation of the meaning of some of the most difficult aspects of American history: military service; sacrifice; citizenship; duty; loyalty; slavery and freedom.
