Not only is the Tripoli Monument one of the oldest Annapolis monuments, but it’s one of the oldest military memorials in the country—and the first to honor the U.S. Navy. The Tripoli Monument memorializes six U.S. naval officers who perished in the first Barbary War (also known as the Tripolitan War) in 1804 while battling the Barbary Coast pirates in the dangerous fighting that ravaged the city of Tripoli, one of the Barbary states in North Africa.

Casimir Pulaski (1745-1779), a Polish soldier and commander, was recruited for the American Revolution, where he made his mark as a cavalry officer and came to be known as "The Father of American Cavalry." Pulaski was mortally wounded in battle at Savannah, Georgia.

A Luta Continua” is a Portuguese slogan that literally means “the struggle continues.” It was indeed a struggle to erect the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial. A struggle that took over twenty years!

This outdoor memorial honors the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, who served for 24 years. His most famous case, [Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka] 1954, ended racial segregation in American public schools.

Thurgood Marshall Memorial

The Memorial was built on Route 450 overlooking the Severn River in Annapolis. Designed by New York architect Secundino Fernandez, the Memorial consists of a rectangular amphitheater surrounded by columns and granite slabs inscribed with the names of 6,454 Marylanders who died in World War II. Stone panels and mosaic circles further depict Maryland's role in the War.

Unveiled in 1999 to mark the centennial of the U.S. Navy's official involvement with submarines. Sculpted in bronze by artist P. Wegner, it shows the top half of an Earth globe, out of which erupts a Noah's Flood-size geyser of water. Riding atop the gusher plume like a surfboard is the front half of a submarine. Within the bow wave of the breaching sub are several porpoises apparently swimming for their very lives -- and the disembodied heads of a half-dozen oversized sailors with blank, unsettling faces.

The monument says, "February 22, 1797: At the Presidential Mansion in Philadelphia, President George Washington formally presented Irish-born John Barry with Commission Number One in the newly formed United States Navy. With the commission, backdated to the time of the original appointment, June 7, 1794, Washington formally reaffirms his trust in Barry's leadership to establish the Navy under the Constitution.

ADM Ben Moreell is the single most important Civil Engineer Corps officer in the history of the corps.  He was Chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks during the most challenging period in the history of the Navy and Civil Engineer Corps -- World War II. Through his personal initiative, an effective naval construction force, the Seabees, was created and the power to command this force was given to Civil Engineer Corps officers.

The Gold Star Family Memorial was created by Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody" Williams to remember those families who sacrificed one of their own in the name of freedom.
